Let \((X,\leq)\) be a locally finite poset, and let \(D=(X,D)\) the complete Hasse diagram associated to \(X\). Let \(R\) be a commutative ring with identity, and let \(A=I(X,R)\) be the incidence algebra of \(X\) over \(R\). Let \(n\in\mathbb{N}\), and \(\theta:A\to A\) an \(n\)-commuting \(R\)-linear map. This means that \([\theta(x),x]_{n}=[[\dots[[\theta(x),\underbrace{x],x],\dots],x]}_{n}=0\) for all \(x\in A\), where \([a,b]=ab-ba\) for all \(a,b\in A\). If \(\lambda\in Z(A)\), the center of \(A\), and \(\mu:A\to A\) is \(R\)-linear such that \(\mu(A)\subseteq Z(A)\), then \(\theta:A\to A\) defined by \(\theta(x)=\lambda x+\mu(x)\) for all \(x\in A\) is an \(n\)-commuting \(R\)-linear map, and is referred to as a proper \(n\)-commuting \(R\)-linear map. The main results of the paper are the following.\par (1) Suppose that \(X\) is finite and connected. Then \(\theta\) is proper if and only if any two directed edges in \(D\) are contained in one cycle when \(R\) is \(2\)-torsion free.\par (2) Suppose that \(X\) is locally finite, and that two directed edges in each connected components of \(D\) are contained in one cycle. Then \(\theta\) is proper provided that \(R\) is \(2\)- and \(n!\)-torsion free.
