The authors generalise the well-known notion of subordination from the setting of bounded \(C_0\)-semigroups on Banach spaces to the case of sequentially equicontinuous equibounded \(C_0\)-semigroups on suitable locally convex spaces. More specifically, the authors consider operators \(A\) on a sequentially complete Hausdorff locally convex space \(X\) such that \(-A\) generates a (sequentially) equicontinuous equibounded \(C_0\)-semigroup. For every Bernstein function \(f\) they show that \(- f ( A)\) generates a semigroup which is of the same `kind' as the semigroup generated by \(- A\). As a special case the authors show that fractional powers \(- A^\alpha\), where \(\alpha\in (0, 1)\), are generators. The authors moreover consider applications of their abstract results to bounded (locally) bi-continuous semigroups and to transition semigroups for Markov processes.
