The authors consider a strongly elliptic coefficient matrix \(\mu\in L^{\infty}(\Omega;\mathbb{C}^{d\times d})\), where \(\Omega\subset \mathbb{R}^d\) is a bounded open set with \(d\ge 2\). They study the values of \(p\) such that the elliptic divergence form operator \(-A:=\nabla\cdot \mu\nabla\) supplemented with Dirichlet, Neumann or mixed boundary conditions generates a strongly continuous semigroup on \(L^p(\Omega)\). For these values of \(p\), they also investigate some additional properties of the semigroup, such as: the analyticity of the semigroup, bounded holomorphic functional calculus, and maximal parabolic regularity. A perturbation result for real-valued coefficients which gives the range of \(p\)'s for small imaginary parts of the coefficients is also presented.
