Let \(R\) be an Artin algebra. The singularity category \(\mathbb{D}_{\mathrm{sg}}(R)\) is defined to be the Verdier quotient of the bounded derived category \(\mathbb{D}^{\mathrm{b}}(\bmod R)\) modulo the triangulated subcategory of perfect \(R\)-complexes. The stable category \(\underline{\mathrm{Gproj}\;R}\) of the category of finitely generated Gorenstein projective \(R\)-modules can be viewed as a triangulated subcategory of \(\mathbb{D}_{\mathrm{sg}}(R)\); Bergh, Oppermann, and Jorgensen introduced in [\textit{P. A. Bergh} et al., Q. J. Math. 66, No. 2, 459--471 (2015; Zbl 1327.13041)] the Gorenstein defect category \(\mathbb{D}_{\mathrm{def}}(R)\) as the corresponding Verdier quotient. For an idempotent \(e \in R\) the authors consider the Schur functor, \[ S_e = eR \otimes_R - \colon \bmod R \longrightarrow \bmod eRe . \] The main result of the paper proves that under certain technical assumptions, the Schur functor induces triangle-equivalence \(\mathbb{D}_{\mathrm{def}}(R) \simeq \mathbb{D}_{\mathrm{def}}(eRe)\). Some applications are given to the situation where \[ R = \left(\begin{array}{cc} A & M \\ 0 & B \end{array}\right) \] is an upper triangular matrix algebra, \(A\) and \(B\) are Artin algebras, \(M\) is an \(A\)-\(B\)-bimodule, and \(e \in R\) is the idempotent corresponding to \(A\) or \(B\).
