The author studies certain Schur functors which preserve singularity categories of rings and apply them to examine the singularity category of triangular matrix rings. Theorem 2.1: Let \(R\) be a left-Noetherian ring, \(e\) its idempotent. Assume that \(e\) is singularly complete and projdim\(_{eRe}eR<\infty\). Then the Schur functor \(S_e\) induces an equivalence of triangulated categories \(D_{sg}(R)\cong D_{sg}(eRe)\). This result is applied along with the Buchweitz-Happel theorem to characterize the singularity categories of certain (upper) triangular matrix (non-Gorenstein) rings via the stable category of some maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules. An easy criterion (Theorem 3.3) is given for verification as to when an upper triangular matrix ring is Gorenstein. The last section of the paper contains singularity categories of some concrete examples of finite-dimensional (non-Gorenstein) algebras.
