The paper under review introduces and studies singular subalgebroids. Its purpose is to lay the foundations for the development of a Lie theory for singular subalgebroids. Singular subalgebroids generalise the notions of Lie subalgebroid and singular foliation at the same time. They can be thought of as Lie-Rineahrt subalgebras of the module of sections of an integrable Lie algebroid \(AG\). Alternatively, a singular subalgebroid may be thought of as a Lie subalgebroid of \(AG\) where the constant rank condition is dropped. Subalgebroids as such appear as images of morphisms of Lie algebroids, momentum maps, also in Poisson geometry. They generalise the usual (wide) Lie subalgebroids to the cases where the base is a submanifold of \(AG\). The principal result is the generalization to singular subalgebroids the construction of the holonomy groupoid of a singular foliation given in [\textit{I. Androulidakis} and \textit{G. Skandalis}, J. Reine Angew. Math. 626, 1--37 (2009; Zbl 1161.53020)]. The groupoid arising in this case is again a topological groupoid and it depends on the choice of Lie groupoid \(G\) which integrates the given Lie algebroid. Moreover, it is shown to generalize the results by \textit{I. Moerdijk} and \textit{J. Mrčun} [Adv. Math. 204, No. 1, 101--115 (2006; Zbl 1131.58015)] on Lie subalgebroids (with constant rank). In the appendix, the undersigned gives the construction of a \(C^*\)-algebra for any singular subalgebroid.
