The authors consider a class of two-dimensional partially hyperbolic systems, not necessarily skew products, thus attempting to develop a general theory. They follow a functional approach, which consists in studying the spectral properties of the transfer operator on appropriate Banach spaces. As a main result, the authors provide explicit conditions for the existence of finitely many physical measures (and SRB measures) and prove exponential decay of correlations for mixing measures. In addition, they show that such measures are absolutely continuous with respect to Lebesgue with density in a suitable Sobolev space. Their results apply to the case of fast-slow partially hyperbolic systems obtaining, for such systems, more precise results on the structure of the SRB measures.
