The main result of the paper is a rather general fixed point theorem which generalizes that proved in [\textit{L. Cădariu} et al., Abstr. Appl. Anal. 2012, Article ID 712743, 10 p. (2012; Zbl 1252.39030)]. The statement of the theorem is too long and complex to be reported here. The main novelty is the application of the so-called Banach limit in the proof of the theorem. After some examples showing applications of the theorem, the last section of the paper is devoted to the application to Ulam stability of functional equations. The general functional equation considered is the following: \[ \psi(x)=\sum_{i=1}^m L_i(x)\psi(f_i(x))+h(x), \quad x \in X, \] where \(X\) is a set, \(m\in \mathbb{N}\), \(f_1,\dots,f_m:X \to X\), \(L_1,\dots,L_m:X \to \mathbb{R}_+\) and \(h:X \to \mathbb{R}\); the unknown function \(\psi\) maps \(X\) into \(\mathbb{R}\).
