Let \(k\) be a number field, \(\mathcal{A}\) a finitely generated subgroup of \(k^{\ast}\), \(G\) a finite abelian group, \(B\in\mathbb N\), and let \(\mathcal{N} (k, G, \mathcal{A}, B)\) be the number of the abelian extensions \(K|k\) of conductor \({\mathfrak f}(K)\) with Galois group \(G\) such that \(\mathcal{A}\subseteq N_{K/k} (K^{\ast})\) and \(N_{k/\mathbb Q}({\mathfrak f}(K))\leq B\). Assuming that \(|G|\neq 1\), the authors obtain an asymptotic formula \[ \mathcal{N} (k, G,\mathcal{A}, B)\sim\;c(k, G,\mathcal{A})\; B\;(\log B)^{\alpha -1}\ \text{ as }B\rightarrow\infty, \] with \(c(k, G, \mathcal{A})>0\) and \(\alpha\in\mathbb Q\), \(\alpha\geq 0\). It follows, in particular, that, for any finite abelian group \(G\) and any finitely generated subgroup \(\mathcal{A}\) of \(k^{\ast}\), there is a field extension \(K|k\) with Galois group \(G\) such that every element of \(\mathcal{A}\) is a norm from \(K\). The authors of the appendix give an alternative algebro-geometric proof of this existence result; according to the authors, their proof is based on a combination of the descent and fibration methods as described in their work: [\textit{Y. Harpaz} and \textit{O. Wittenberg}, J. Am. Math. Soc. 33, No. 3, 775--805 (2020; Zbl 1469.14053)]. To prove the cited asymptotic formula, the authors study the analytic properties of certain Dirichlet series, making use of the harmonic analysis technique developed in their early work: [\textit{C. Frei} et al., Am. J. Math. 140, No. 6, 1639--1685 (2018; Zbl 1426.11127)]. Here is another result of the work under review. Let \(k\) be a number field and \(G\) a finite abelian group, then the proportion of the extensions \(K|k\) with Galois group \(G\) that do not satisfy the Hasse norm principle is equal to zero, when those extensions are ordered by conductor. On the other hand, in their just cited early work the authors construct (and classify) finite abelian groups \(H\) for which a positive proportion of the extensions \(L|k\) with Galois group \(H\) fail the Hasse norm principle, when such extensions are ordered by discriminant.
