      In the paper under review the authors study a functional identity in a standard operator algebra involving a linear mapping \(D\), and obtain a conclusion which is related to a classical result of Chernoff. More precisely, let \(n\geq 3\) be a fixed integer, \(X\) be a real or complex Banach space, \(L(X)\) be the algebra of all bounded linear operators on \(X\), and \(A(X)\subseteq L(X)\) be a standard operator algebra. Suppose there exists a linear mapping \(D : A(X)\to L(X)\) satisfying the relation \[ 2^{n-2}D(A^n) = \sum_{i=0}^{n-2} \biggl( \begin{array}{c} n-2\\ i\\ \end{array} \biggr)A^i D(A^2) A^{n-2-i}\] \[+(2^{n-2}-1)\biggl(D(A)A^{n-1}+A^{n-1}D(A)\biggr)\] \[+\sum_{i=1}^{n-2}\Biggl( \sum_{k=2}^{i} (2^{k-1}-1) \biggl( \begin{array}{c} n-k-2\\ i-k\\ \end{array} \biggr)+\sum_{k=2}^{n-1-i} (2^{k-1}-1) \biggl( \begin{array}{c} n-k-2\\ n-i-k-1\\ \end{array} \biggr)\Biggr)A^iD(A)A^{n-1-i} \] for any \(A\in A(X)\). Then \(D\) is of the form \(D(A) = [B, A]\) for all \(A\in A(X)\), and some fixed \(B\in L(X)\). In particular, \(D\) is continuous.
