The main result of this article (Theorem 1.2) is an inequality of Bogomolov type for semistable parabolic Higgs bundles on a polarized smooth projective variety \((X,\omega)\). While the case of stable parabolic bundles was previously addressed by \textit{J. Y. Li} [Commun. Anal. Geom. 8, No. 3, 445--475 (2000; Zbl 0978.32026), the argument in [loc. cit.] does not directly apply to the Higgs case since the existence of a good metric is not immediate there. \textit{T. Mochizuki} [Kobayashi-Hitchin correspondence for tame harmonic bundles and an application. Paris: Société Mathématique de France (2006; Zbl 1119.14001)] introduced the concept of a graded semisimple parabolic Higgs bundle and proved that any such bundle admits a good metric. To prove Theorem 1.2, the author uses the aforementioned work of Mochizuki together with a Chern number inequality (Theorem 1.1) for (not necessarily semistable) Higgs bundles on a (not necessarily compact) Kähler manifold satisfying the boundedness conditions used by \textit{C. Simpson} in [J. Am. Math. Soc. 1, No. 4, 867--918 (1988; Zbl 0669.58008)].
