In order to solve a homogeneous Dirichlet boundary value problem attached to a general linear second-order non-selfadjoint indefinite elliptic PDE in a Lipschitz polygonal domain, the authors use a nonconforming virtual element method (NCVEM). With some technicalities they prove a discrete inf-sup estimate and optimal a priori error estimates as well as both reliability and efficiency of an explicit residual-based a posteriori error estimator. Some numerical experiments are carried out on three computational benchmark problems (smooth solution on a square domain, non-smooth solution on an L-shape domain and internal layer solution to Helmholtz problem). They underline the sharpness of the a priori as well as of the a posteriori error analyses and also illustrate the superiority of adaptive over uniform mesh-refining.
