Let \(R\) be an associative ring with identity. All modules are left unitary and right \(R\)-modules are considered as modules over the opposite ring \(R^{\circ}\). This paper deals with virtually Gorenstein rings. The notion of virtually Gorensteinness was first introduced for Artin algebras by \textit{A. Beligiannis} and \textit{I. Reiten} [Homological and homotopical aspects of torsion theories. Providence, RI: American Mathematical Society (AMS) (2007; Zbl 1124.18005)]. Then, in 2014, \textit{F. Zareh-Khoshchehreh} et al. [J. Pure Appl. Algebra 218, No. 12, 2356--2366 (2014; Zbl 1297.13017)] extend it to the setting of commutative Noetherian rings of finite Krull dimension. In this paper, the authors extend the notion of virtually Gorensteinness to general associative rings. They call the ring \(R\) \textit{virtually Gorenstein} if \(\mathcal{GP}(R)^{\bot}={}^{\bot}\mathcal{GI}(R)\) and \(\mathcal{GP}(R^{\circ})^{\bot}={}^{\bot}\mathcal{GI}(R^{\circ}).\) Here \(\mathcal{GP}(R)\) (respectively \(\mathcal{GI}(R)\)) stands for the class of all Gorenstein projective (respectively Gorenstein injective) \(R\)-modules. Also, recall that for a class \(\mathscr{X}\) of \(R\)-modules, \(\mathscr{X}^{\bot}\) (respectively \(^{\bot}\mathscr{X}\)) denotes the class of \(R\)-modules \(M\) with the property that \(\mathrm{Ext}^{\geq 1}_{R}(X,M)=0\) (respectively \(\mathrm{Ext}^{\geq 1}_{R}(M,X)=0\)) for all \(R\)-modules \(X\in \mathscr{X}.\) Gorenstein projective modules were studied first by \textit{M. Auslander} and \textit{M. Bridger} [Stable module theory. Providence, RI: American Mathematical Society (AMS) (1969; Zbl 0204.36402)]. Also, the notion of Gorenstein flat modules is introduced by \textit{E. E. Enochs} et al. [J. Nanjing Univ., Math. Biq. 10, No. 1, 1--9 (1993; Zbl 0794.16001)]. Although every projective \(R\)-module is flat, it is not the case that every Gorenstein projective \(R\)-module is Gorenstein flat. The \textit{Gorenstein weak global dimension} of \(R\) is defined as the supremum of Gorenstein flat dimension of all \(R\)-modules. Let \(\mathcal{GF}(R)\) denote the class of all Gorenstein flat \(R\)-modules. The authors proves that if \(R\) has finite Gorenstein weak global dimension, then \(R\) is virtually Gorenstein and \(\mathcal{GP}(R)\subseteq \mathcal{GF}(R)\) and \(\mathcal{GP}(R^{\circ}) \subseteq \mathcal{GF}(R^{\circ})\).
