Gorenstein (local) rings have long been popular objects of study in commutative algebra. On the one hand, they come up naturally as immediate generalizations of complete intersections. On the other hand, those rings possess nice homological properties that make them amenable to methods of homological algebra. With the invention of (maximal) Cohen-Macaulay approximations by Auslander and Buchweitz in the mid-80's, it became clear that module theory of Gorenstein rings also has a rich structure. Without much exaggeration, it can be said that nowadays the primary methods of study of Gorenstein rings are of module-theoretic nature. An interesting by-product of this new paradigm are various non-commutative generalizations of Gorenstein rings. Parallel to that are the efforts to understand the stable and derived categories of (suitably defined) Gorenstein rings. The paper under review deals exactly with that issue. The main object of study is the class of virtually Gorenstein algebras, which is a common generalization of Gorenstein algebras and algebras of finite representation or Cohen-Macaulay type. The author also shows how these algebras are related to the Gorenstein Symmetry Conjecture and the Telescope Conjecture for module or stable categories.
