This paper deals with the Hörmander calculus of pseudodifferential operators on compact Lie groups. In particular, the notions of local and global symbols are discussed and the connections between the latter and local objects such as the principal symbol and the non-commutative residue are highlighted. Part of the paper focuses on the case of the torus \(\mathbb{T}^n\), where a global symbol is defined on \(\mathbb{T}^n \times \mathbb{Z}^n\) using trigonometric Fourier series and, if the corresponding operator is classical, it does extend to a symbol on \(\mathbb{T}^n \times \mathbb{R}^n\) which coincides with the local symbol up to smoothing symbols. While the setting provided by compact Lie groups is more natural for the purposes of harmonic analysis, it is more challenging to set a global calculus and to relate it with underlying local properties. A characterization of pseudodifferential operators with classical symbols is provided and the relation between principal and global symbols is clarified. Moreover, the non-commutative residue and the canonical trace are derived as coefficients appearing in suitable expansions.
