In the paper under review, the authors explore the question of when the Rees algebra \(\mathcal{R}(I) = \bigoplus_{n \geq 0} I^n\) of \(I\) is an almost Gorenstein graded ring, where \((R,\mathfrak{m})\) is a \(2\)-dimensional regular local ring and \(I\) is a contracted ideal of \(R\). In [J. Pure Appl. Algebra 220, No. 10, 3425--3436 (2016, Zbl 1342.13033)], the authors showed that \(\mathcal{R}(I)\) is an almost Gorenstein graded ring for every integrally closed ideal \(I\) of \(R\). While integrally closed \(\mathfrak{m}\)-primary ideals are contracted and stable, a similar affirmative answer for contracted stable ideals is not true and is dependent on the order \(\text{o}(I)\) of the contracted ideal \(I\). The main results of the paper show that if \(I\) is a contracted ideal with \(\text{o}(I) \leq 2\), then \(\mathcal{R}(I)\) is an almost Gorenstein graded ring, while if \(\text{o}(I) \geq 3\), then \(\mathcal{R}(I)\) is not necessarily an almost Gorenstein graded ring, even though \(I\) is a contracted stable ideal. Thus both affirmative and negative answers are given.
