The goal of the present paper is to extend the results about relaxation, existence and approximation obtained for energies related to \textit{material voids in elastic solids} in [\textit{A. Braides} et al., ESAIM, Control Optim. Calc. Var. 13, No. 4, 717--734 (2007; Zbl 1149.49017)], and \textit{epitaxially strained films} in [\textit{E. Bonnetier} and \textit{A. Chambolle}, SIAM J. Appl. Math. 62, No. 4, 1093--1121 (2002; Zbl 1001.49017)] and [\textit{A. Chambolle} and \textit{M. Solci}, SIAM J. Math. Anal. 39, No. 1, 77--102 (2007; Zbl 1354.49022)], respectively, to the case of linear elasticity in arbitrary space dimensions. To this end, the properties of a newly introduced space of \(GSBD^p\) functions which may also attain a limit value \(\infty\) (denoted by \(GSBD^p_\infty\)) are investigated, as well as a compactness result with respect to a correspondingly novel notion of convergence of sets, for sequences of rectifiable sets with bounded Hausdorff measure is established.
