The paper under review studies the geometry of a class of smooth projective varieties constructed by Schreieder for their noteworthy Hodge theoretic properties [\textit{S. Schreieder}, Geom. Topol. 19, No. 1, 295--342 (2015; Zbl 1314.32037)]. In particular, it is proved that these varieties have Kodaira dimension 1. In the cases of dimension 2 and 3, the author obtains a moduli theoretic interpretation of Schreieder's varieties. Namely, the minimal models of Schreieder's surfaces are proved to be elliptic modular surfaces attached to an explicit non-congruence subgroup of \(\mathrm{SL}(2, \mathbb{Z})\) (cf. [\textit{T. Shioda}, J. Math. Soc. Japan 24, 20--59 (1972; Zbl 0226.14013)] for the definition). Moreover, the general smooth fibre of the Iitaka fibration over \(\mathbb{P}^1\) associated to a Schreieder's threefold is a \(K3\) surface of Picard rank 19.
