The tools of compensated/concentration compactness are used to treat the problem of existence of solutions to certain nonlinear partial differential equations. The main goal is to obtain criteria for the strong \(L^p\) convergence of a sequence of approximate solutions of the considered equation. Extension of these methods to objects defined on the phase space led to the introduction of \(H\)-measures and microlocal defect measures [\textit{L. Tartar}, Proc. R. Soc. Edinb., Sect. A, Math. 115, No. 3--4, 193--230 (1990; Zbl 0774.35008); \textit{P. Gérard}, Commun. Partial Differ. Equations 16, No. 11, 1761--1794 (1991; Zbl 0770.35001)]. \(H\)-distributions, as introduced by the first two authors in [Abstr. Appl. Anal. 2011, Article ID 901084, 12~p. (2011; Zbl 1229.42014)], can be viewed as an extension of \(H\)-measures to the \(L^p\)-setting (\(1<p<\infty\)). Another related tool is introduced under the notion of microlocal compactness forms in [\textit{F.~Rindler}, Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 215, No.~1, 1--63 (2015; Zbl 1327.35004)]. The main goal of this paper is a thorough comparison of the notions of \(H\)-distributions and microlocal compactness forms. In particular, the authors introduce a simplified variant of microlocal compactness forms which appears to include the standard \(H\)-measures, \(H\)-distributions, and Young measures. This approach, in turn, provides a way to extend the standard constructions of \(H\)-measures and \(H\)-distributions along rays to more general curves. In addition, microlocal compactness forms are generalized to a fractional setting.
