This is the first of two review papers concerning the Kuramoto model (KM) of sinusoidally coupled phase oscillators. The introduction gives a brief history of research in coupled oscillators, then discusses the KM and its many generalisations. Section two describes the KM, shows how to write it in terms of phase differences, and defines concepts such as phase synchrony, frequency synchrony, full synchrony, cluster states and splay states, and introduces the idea of heteroclinic switching. In section three the author uses mostly his own previously obtained results to show the influence of various types of couplings on the formation of different forms of collective dynamics in the systems and on the bifurcations between different behaviours. He also shows how the symmetry of interaction between the elements and coupling functions in the models affect the formation of various types of synchronisation. As well as the KM, other models studied include the Kuramoto-Sakaguchi model, a system with a nonlinear coupling function, a system with two harmonics in the coupling function, systems with even and odd coupling functions, and systems with attractive and repulsive couplings. Section four is a brief discussion which includes some open problems. There are 132 references listed, but as mentioned, this is only a fraction of those relevant. For Part II, see [the author, ibid. 253, No. 2, 204--229 (2021; Zbl 1462.34001); translation from Neliniĭni Kolyvannya 22, No. 3, 312-340 (2019)].
