The authors consider positive, real-valued lacunary sequences \[\{a(x)\}^{\infty}_{x=1}\] and show that the pair correlation function of the fractional parts of \(\alpha a(x)\) is Poissonian for Lebesgue almost all real numbers \(\alpha\). The result follows from a bound for the number of solutions \((x_{1}, x_{2}, y_{1}, y_{2}, n\mathcal{}_{1}, n_{2})\) of the Diophantine inequality \[\mid n_{1}(a(x_{1})- a(y_{1}))-n_{2}(a(x_{2})- a(y_{2}))\mid < N^{\varepsilon},\] with \(1\leq y_{i}\neq x_{i}\leq N,\; 1 \leq\mid n_{i}\mid\leq N^{1+\varepsilon}\; (i=1, 2)\), where \(N\in \mathbb{N}\) and \(\varepsilon > 0\).\\ The proof is based on a Fourier analysis approach and a certain polynomial variance bound. For estimating the number of solutions of the Diophantine inequality ideas of earlier work of the first author and \textit{A. Zaharescu} [Acta Arith. 89, No. 3, 283--293 (1999; Zbl 0961.11028)] are used.
