The paper deals with the free boundary value problem for the Euler equation with a linear dumping, namely, \[ \begin{split} \partial_t \rho + \mathrm{div}(\rho u) & = 0\ \mbox{in }\Omega(t),\\ \partial_t (\rho u) + \mathrm{div} (\rho u \otimes u) + \nabla p(\rho) & = - \rho u\ \mbox{in }\Omega(t),\\ \rho & >0 \ \mbox{in }\Omega(t),\\ \rho & = 0\ \mbox{on }\Gamma(t) = \partial \Omega(t),\\ \mathcal V(\Gamma(t)) & = u\cdot \mathcal N. \end{split} \] Here \(\rho\) and \(u\) are unknown density and velocity, \(\mathcal N\) is the unit outer normal and \(\mathcal V\) is a velocity of the moving vacuum boundary. The Euler equation with the linear dumping are closely related to the porous media equation \[ \partial_t \rho = \Delta p(\rho)\] endowed with Darcy's law \[ \nabla p(\rho) = -\rho u. \] The solution of the porous media equation given by \textit{G. I. Barenblatt} [Prikl. Mat. Mekh. 17, 739--742 (1953; Zbl 0053.46103)] is \[ \overline \rho(t,x) = (1+t)^{-3/(3\gamma-1)} \left(\underline A - \underline B(1+t)^{-2/(3\gamma-1)}|x|^2\right)^{1/(\gamma-1)}. \] The corresponding Barenblatt velocity \(\overline u\) is then defined by Darcy's law as \[ \overline u = -\frac{\nabla p(\rho)}{\overline \rho}. \] The main theorem of the paper yields the existence of a strong solution to the Euler equation with the linear dumping assuming that the initial conditions are close to the Barenblatt solution to the porous media equation. There is also provided an explicit formula for the minimal time of lifespan of the solution.
