Let \(H\) be a complex Hilbert space, \(\mathcal{B}(H)\) the space of all bounded linear operators on \(H\) and \(N\) an arbitrary norm on \(\mathcal{B}(H)\).\par Given \(S,T\in \mathcal{B}(H)\), one writes \(S\perp_B^NT\) if \[N(S+\lambda T)\geq N(S) \ \ \ \ \forall \lambda\in \mathbb{C}.\] \par This notion is known as Birkhoff-James-Orthogonality in arbitrary normed spaces.\par Based on this concept of orthogonality, the authors introduce and study a generalization of the classical numerical radius for Hilbert space operators, namely \[w_N(T)=\sup\{|\xi|:\xi\in \mathbb{C}, I\perp_B^N(T-\xi I)\} \ \ \ \ \forall T\in \mathcal{B}(H),\] where \(I\) denotes the identity operator.
