This article surveys certain open problems in noncommutative algebra from the viewpoint of skew PBW extensions and semi-graded rings. First, the author considers Serre's theorem: If \(A\) is a finitely generated commutative graded \(k\)-algebra, generated over \(k\) by elements of degree one, and \(X\) is the associated projective scheme, then there is an equivalence of categories \(\mathrm{coh} X \to \mathrm{qgr} A\). A noncommutative version of Serre's theorem is due to \textit{M. Artin} and \textit{J.J. Zhang} [Adv. Math. 109, No. 2, 228--287 (1994; Zbl 0833.14002)] as well as \textit{A.B. Verevkin} [Math. Notes 52, No. 4, 1 (1992; Zbl 0812.16007); translation from Mat. Zametki 52, No. 4, 35--41 (1992)]. The present author proves a version of this equivalence for semi-graded rings. Remarks are provided for a variety of other problems, including the Gelfand-Kirillov conjecture, Serre's problem and the Quillen-Suslin theorem, the noetherian property for Artin-Schelter regular algebras, and the Zariski cancellation problem. The author gives examples in each case to motivate these problems.
