The authors consider Bergman spaces \(A^p_\varphi\) consisting of holomorphic functions that are \(p\)-integrable with respect to the weight \(e^{-p\varphi(z)}\) on the unit disk. Such spaces have been studied in several papers with different conditions on \(\varphi\); in this paper it is assumed that \(\varphi\) belongs to the class \(\mathcal{W}_0\) that was recently studied by Hu, Lv and Schuster. The main results characterize boundedness and compactness of Toeplitz operators \(T_\mu:A^p_\varphi \to A^q_\varphi\), where \(\mu\) is a non-negative Borel measure. The novelty of the present work is that the authors allow \(p\) and \(q\) to be in the interval \((0,1]\). As is to be expected, when \(p\leq q\), the characterization involves Carleson-type measures. When \(p>q\) the characterization is given in terms of \(pq/(pq)\)-integrability of an auxiliary function \(\widetilde{\mu}\). In addition to the main results, the paper involves techniques and estimates that can be useful for people working on Bergman spaces with exponential weights.
