The authors consider an unbounded symmetric tridiagonal operator \(T\) and obtain conditions for \(T\) to be a self-adjoint operator and conditions for the spectrum \(\sigma(T)\) of \(T\) to be equal with \(\Lambda(T)\) the set of all limit points of the eigenvalues of truncated \(T_{N}\). The proofs are based on the ideas of \textit{E. K. Ifantis} et al. [Cent. Eur. J. Math. 5, No.~2, 335--344 (2007; Zbl 1130.47002)] and extend them. The obtained results improve and generalize known results and the given examples illustrate the advantages of the new results compared with previous ones. Finally, some consequences in the theory of continued fractions are remarked.
