The concept of Lie algebroids is relevant in different fields of geometry and has interesting applications in physics, as well. In the present paper, the author studies the extensions of Lie algebroids from a general perspective. The aim is to get a unified treatment for a large variety of situations. The approach considered involves Ehresmann connections, which allows straight generalizations of classical constructions. The importance of the integral affine structure on the base of a Lagrangian fibration is pointed out. The paper is focused on understanding topological invariants of Lagrangian fibrations, since special Lagrangian fibrations play a fundamental role in mirror symmetry. A spectral sequence converging to the cohomology of an extension is described. Choosing a connection, formulas are obtained for the successive coboundary operators. Also, some examples are discussed.
