Let \(\mathcal{U}\) be an associative algebra. A linear map \(\delta\) from \(\mathcal{U}\) into itself is called a derivation if the identity \(\delta(AB)=\delta(A)B+A\delta(B)\) holds for all \(A\) and \(B\) in \(\mathcal{U}\). A well-known direction in the study of the local action of derivations is the local derivation problem. Recall that \(\delta\) is a local derivation if for every \(A\in \mathcal{U}\) there exists a derivation \(\delta_A\) of \(\mathcal{U}\), depending on \(A\), such that \(\delta(A)=\delta_A(A)\). The foundations of the investigations on local derivations are in [J. Algebra 130, No. 2, 494--509 (1990; Zbl 0751.46041)], where \textit{R. V. Kadison} proved that every norm-continuous local derivation from a von Neumann algebra into its dual bimodule is a derivation. \textit{D. R. Larson} and \textit{A. R. Sourour} [Proc. Symp. Pure Math. 51, 187--194 (1990; Zbl 0713.47045)] proved that every local derivation on \(B(X)\), the algebra of all bounded linear operators on a Banach space \(X\), is a derivation. In [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 353, No. 1, 313--325 (2001; Zbl 0971.46043)], \textit{B. E. Johnson} obtained the same result from any \(C^\ast\)-algebra into its Banach bimodule. More generally, a linear map \(\delta\) of \(\mathcal{U}\) is called a Lie derivation if \(\delta([A, B])=[\delta(A),B]+[A, \delta(B)]\) for all \(A,B\in \mathcal{U}\). Here \([A, B]=AB-BA\) is the usual Lie product, also called a commutator. We say that a linear map \(\delta: \mathcal{U} \longrightarrow \mathcal{U}\) is a local Lie derivation if for every \(A\in \mathcal{U}\), there exists a Lie derivation \(\delta_A\), depending on \(A\), such that \(\delta(A)=\delta_A(A)\). It is natural to ask: What is the structure of local Lie derivations? \textit{L. Chen} et al. [Integral Equations Oper. Theory 77, No. 1, 109--121 (2013; Zbl 1280.47047)] consider the questions on the algebra \(B(X)\) of all bounded linear operators on Banach space \(X\). They showed that each local Lie derivation from \(B(X)\) into itself is a Lie derivation. Later, \textit{L. Chen} and \textit{F. Lu} [Linear Algebra Appl. 475, 62--72 (2015; Zbl 1314.47118)] proved that each local Lie derivation of nest algebras on Hilbert spaces is a Lie derivation. In [Linear Algebra Appl. 519, 208--218 (2017; Zbl 1478.47034), Ann. Funct. Anal. 8, No. 2, 270--280 (2017; Zbl 1373.47035)], \textit{D. Liu} and \textit{J. Zhang} proved that the same is true for local Lie derivations on von Neumann algebras and a certain class of triangular algebras, respectively. The objective of the present paper under review is to characterize local Lie derivations of generalized matrix algebras under certain conditions. Let \(\mathcal{G}\) be a generalized matrix algebra with center \(\mathcal{Z(G)}\). The author proves that, under certain conditions, every local Lie derivation \(\delta\) of \(\mathcal{G}\) can be written in the form \(\delta=d+h\), where \(d\) is a derivation of \(\mathcal{G}\) and \(h\) is a linear map from \(\mathcal{G}\) into \(\mathcal{Z(G)}\) vanishing on each commutator. And then, this result is directly applied to some full matrix algebras and triangular algebras.
