A strong form of the quantitative Sobolev inequality in Euclidean space is established, for \(n\ge 2\) and \(p\in \left( 1,n\right)\). Given any function \(u\) such that \(u\in L^{p^{\ast }}\left( \mathbb{R}^{n}\right) \) and \(\left\vert \nabla u\right\vert \in L^{p}\left( \mathbb{R}^{n}\right)\), where \(p^{\ast }=\frac{np}{n-p}\), the author shows that the gap in the Sobolev inequality controls \(\left\Vert \nabla u-\nabla v\right\Vert _{p}\), where \(v\) is an extremal function for the Sobolev inequality.
