In treating a number of discrete problems arising from the numerical discretization of differential equations, the knowledge of the spectral distribution of the associated matrix is of particular importance. The authors offer a remarkable review of the subject and at the same time systematically present the theory of block generalized locally Toeplitz (GLT) sequences (see Section 3 and Section 4). In Section 4 the authors prove the main singular value and eigenvalue distribution results for block generalized locally Toeplitz sequences (see Theorem 4.7 and Theorem 4.10), topological density results for block GLT sequences (see Theorem 4.21), characterizations of block GLT sequences (see, Theorem 4.23) and sequences of block matrices with block GLT blocks (Theorem 4.25). Several emblematic applications of this theory in the context of discretizations of differential equations, including GLT analysis of the higher-order discretization of diffusion equations, are also discussed.
