Mirror symmetry is a paradigmatic reflection of how modern mathematics and physics (especially string theory) interact. Using the Strominger-Yau-Zaslow Programme, the authors very nicely show, with mathematical rigour, the suspicion, from the point of view of gauge theory on branes by Aganagic-Karch-Luest-Miemiec, that the generalized conifold and the orbifolded conifold are (locally) mirror to each other as (toric) Calabi-Yau manifolds. The paper also gives support to the Morrison conjecture that geometric transitions are reversed under mirror symmetry.
