A set \(\Omega\subset\mathbb{R}^d\) of finite positive measure is called a wavelet set if there is a countable translation set \(\Lambda\subset\mathbb{R}^n\) and a countable dilation set \(\mathcal{D}\) of \(n\times n\) invertible matrices such that the family \[ \{| \det D|^{1/2}\hat 1_\Omega(Dx - \lambda) : D \in \mathcal{D}, \lambda\in \Lambda\} \] forms an orthonormal basis for \(L^2(\mathbb{R}^n)\). Here \(\hat 1_\Omega\) is the inverse Fourier transform of the characteristic function of \(\Omega\). \(\Omega\) is called a Riesz wavelet set, if for some \(\Lambda\) and \(\mathcal{D}\) the above family forms a Riesz basis for \(L^2(\mathbb{R}^d)\). \textit{Y. Wang} [Duke Math. J. 114, No. 1, 43--57 (2002; Zbl 1011.42024)] proved that if the sets \(\{\alpha^\tau (\Omega): \alpha\in \mathcal{D}\}\) tile \(\mathbb{R}^n\) and the set of exponentials \(\{e^{2\pi\lambda\cdot x} : \lambda \in\Lambda\}\) forms an orthogonal basis for \(L^2(\Omega)\), then \(\Omega\) is a wavelet set with respect to \(\mathcal{D}\) and \(\Lambda\). The converse also holds, provided that \(0\in\Lambda\). Here \(\alpha^\tau\) denotes the transpose matrix of \(\alpha\). \textit{H. Führ} and \textit{Y. Maus} [``Wavelet Riesz bases associated to nonisotropic dilations'', Preprint, \url{arXiv:1510.01832}] extended the sufficiency part of this result (replacing tiling by multi-tiling) to Riesz wavelet sets. The purpose of this paper is to establish the necessary formalism to state and prove analogues of the above results in the setting of locally compact abelian groups. Some relevant examples and open problems are also presented.
