The two main results of this paper are \begin{itemize} \item[1)] in first-countable \(\omega\)-monolithic spaces star-countability is equivalent to having countable extent, and \item[2)] under CH: if \(K\) is compact and \(C_p(K)\) is star-countable then it is in fact Lindelöf (because then \(K\) is \(\omega_1\)-monolithic). \end{itemize} The rest of the paper is devoted to a study of the property ``every discrete subset is in the closure of a countable set'', which features in the proofs of the main results. A list of open problems on this and related properties concludes the paper.
