The note describes a construction for deriving the Milnor number of a sufficiently well-behaved isolated plane curve singularity based on the Newton polygon by means of tropical geometry. After a short introduction to tropical curves, their duality with subdivisions of the associated Newton polytope is given as main technical tool. Applying a famous result of \textit{A. G. Kushnirenko} [Invent. Math. 32, 1--31 (1976; Zbl 0328.32007)], the desired subdivision is obtained via polyhedral arguments, leading to a tropical curve. The statements are illustrated by helpful examples.
