Let $(K, v)$ be a henselian valued field. A monic irreducible polynomial $F(x)$ belonging to $K[x]$ is called defectless if $\deg F(x)$ equals the product of the ramification index and the residual degree of the extension of $(K, v)$ obtained by adjoining a root of $F(x)$ to $K$. In this paper, the authors give constructive methods to produce approximations to defectless polynomials by key polynomials for inductive valuations introduced by \textit{S. MacLane} in his classical paper [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 40, 363--395 (1936; Zbl 0015.29202)], for real valuations and extended to arbitrary rank valuations by \textit{M. Vaquié} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 359, No. 7, 3439--3481 (2007; Zbl 1121.13006)]. Besides other significant results, the authors prove that a monic irreducible polynomial $F(x)\in K[x]$ is the key polynomial of an inductive valuation if and only if it is an Okutsu polynomial, which is so if and only if $F(x)$ is defectless. The paper is written in a lucid manner and makes a good contribution to the study of defectless polynomials.
