The authors study Birkhoff-James orthogonality on operator spaces in terms of the Bhatia-Šemrl property. A famous result of \textit{R. Bhatia} and \textit{P. Šemrl} [Linear Algebra Appl. 287, No. 1--3, 77--85 (1999; Zbl 0937.15023)] characterizes Birkhoff-James orthogonality of two operators on a finite-dimensional Hilbert space in terms of Birkhoff-James orthogonality of vectors. The possible extension of this result to other finite-dimensional spaces was asked by the authors and solved in the negative by \textit{C.-K. Li} and \textit{H. Schneider} [Linear Algebra Appl. 347, No. 1--3, 115--122 (2002; Zbl 1003.15028)]; actually, this property characterizes finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces [\textit{C. Benítez} et al., Linear Algebra Appl. 422, No. 1, 155--163 (2007; Zbl 1125.15026)]. An operator \(T\) between two Banach spaces \(X\) and \(Y\) is said to have the Bhatia-Šemrl property if, for any other operator \(S\) which is Birkhoff-James orthogonal to \(T\), there is a norm-one element \(x\) at which \(T\) attains its norm and such that \(Tx\) and \(Sx\) are Birkhoff-James orthogonals. Among other results, the authors show that \(X\) is reflexive if and only if all functionals on \(X\) satisfy the Bhatia-Šemrl property; they also extend some results of \textit{J. Lindenstrauss} [Isr. J. Math. 1, 139--148 (1963; Zbl 0127.06704)], \textit{J. Bourgain} [Isr. J. Math. 28, 265--271 (1977; Zbl 0365.46021)], \textit{R. Huff} [Rev. Roum. Math. Pures Appl. 25, 239--241 (1980; Zbl 0434.46004)] and \textit{W. Schachermayer} [Isr. J. Math. 44, 201--212 (1983; Zbl 0542.46013)] on the density of norm attaining operators to the density of operators satisfying the Bhatia-Šemrl property.
