For any 4-dimensional oriented Riemannian manifold \((M,g)\), the author introduces the vector bundle \(\mathbb Z(M,g)\) of generalized almost complex structures on \(M\) compatible with \(g\) (generalized twistors), and he decomposes this vector bundle in four connected components \(\mathbb Z^{\pm\pm}(M,g)\). The vector bundle \(\mathbb Z(M,g)\) admits a generalized almost complex structure \(\mathcal J\) and the author studies the integrability of \(\mathcal J\) in terms of the connected components and the curvature of the metric. More precisely, he obtains in the main theorem that \(\mathcal J\) is integrable: (a) on \(\mathbb Z^{++}(M,g)\) if and only if \(g\) is anti-autodual and Ricci flat; (b) on \(\mathbb Z^{--}(M,g)\) if and only if \(g\) is autodual and Ricci flat; (c) on \(\mathbb Z^{+-}(M,g)\) or \(\mathbb Z^{-+}(M,g)\) if and only if \(g\) is of constant sectional curvature. A new almost complex structure \(\mathcal J_1\) is defined on \(\mathbb Z(M,g)\) in Section 5. As in the main theorem, the author shows that the integrability of \(\mathcal J_1\) depends on the connected components and the curvature of the metric. Finally, the author gives a generalized version of a classical result about the integrability of the natural almost complex structure on the space \(Z(M,D)\) of classical twistors on a \(4n\)-dimensional quaternionic Kähler manifold \((M,g,D)\). Given a \(4n\)-dimensional Riemannian manifold \((M,g,D_1,D_2)\) with two quaternionic Kähler structures, the generalized almost complex structure \(\mathcal J\) on \(\mathbb Z(M,D_1,D_2)\) is integrable if and only if one of the following conditions holds: (a) the scalar curvature of \(g\) is zero; (b) the elements of \(D_1\) and \(D_2\) commute.
