This article expands on the author's doctoral thesis [Generalized complex geometry. PhD thesis. Oxford University (2004), \url{arXiv:math/0401221}], the first part of which was published as [Ann. Math. (2) 174, No. 1, 75--123 (2011; Zbl 1235.32020)]. There the notion of generalized complex structure is studied, whereas the present article considers generalized Kähler structures: a pair of generalized complex structures which commute and which define a positive definite metric on the ambient Courant algebroid. An important result in the first part of the paper is that generalized Kähler geometry is equivalent to bi-Hermitian geometry, providing a convenient description of a kind of geometry that had appeared previously in the physics literature. In particular, the underlying manifold is equipped with a Riemannian metric and two complex structures. These two complex structures, \(I_+\) and \(I_-\), are not isomorphic in general. The second part of the paper describes their relation in terms of Morita equivalence between certain holomorphic Dirac structures associated to the two complex structures.
