The aim of this paper is to provide a homotopical interpretation of the derived category of the category of mixed Tate motives over \(\mathbb Z\) in the sense of [\textit{P. Deligne} and \textit{A. B. Goncharov}, Ann. Sci. Éc. Norm. Supér. (4) 38, No. 1, 1--56 (2005; Zbl 1084.14024)]. The main result states that this derived category is equivalent to the homotopy category of module spectra over \(K(S^0) \otimes \mathbb Q\), the rationalized algebraic \(K\)-theory of the sphere spectrum. To establish this equivalence, the author constructs an isomorphism \[ \mathbb Q \oplus kO_*[1] \otimes \mathbb Q \to K_*(S^0) \otimes \mathbb Q \] and uses a Koszul duality result of K. Hess. The author discusses the relationship of the present paper to work in various mathematical fields, including work of Kitchloo on symplectic manifolds [\textit{N. Kitchloo}, Contemp. Math. 620, 251--279 (2014; Zbl 1351.53093)] and work of Blumberg, Gepner and Tabuada [\textit{A. J. Blumberg} et al., Geom. Topol. 17, No. 2, 733--838 (2013; Zbl 1267.19001)] on characterizations of algebraic \(K\)-theory.
