The author considers the property \(N_p\) of Green-Lazarsfeld for ruled variety \(X = \text{Proj}_C(E)\) over a curve \(C\) of genus \(g\). Let \(H = {\mathcal O}(1)\) be the tautological line bundle on \(X\). The authors shows: assume that \((\mathbb P^n, {\mathcal O}(a))\) satisfies the property \(N_p\) for some \(p \geq 0\); then there is an integer \(s = s(a, p)\) such that \(aH + \pi^*B\) satisfies the property \(N_p\) if \(\deg(B) \geq s\), where \(\pi : X \rightarrow C\) is the projection. A partial converse to the result above is also obtained by the author. The author also improves \textit{D. C. Butler's} result on minimal slope of vector bundles [J. Differ. Geom. 39, 1--34 (1994; Zbl 0808.14024)] for ruled surfaces; see the paper for the details.
