Abstract: For a vector bundle mathcalE of rank n+1 over a smooth projective curve C of genus g, let X=PC(mathcalE) with projection map pi:XoC. In this paper we investigate the minimal free resolution of homogeneous coordinate rings of X. We first clarify the relations between higher syzygies of very ample line bundles on X and higher syzygies of Veronese embedding of fibres of pi by the same line bundle. More precisely, letting H=mathcalOPC(mathcalE)(1) be the tautological line bundle, we prove that if (Pn,mathcalOPn(a)) satisfies Property Np, then (X,aH+pi∗B) satisfies Property Np for all BinPicC having sufficiently large degree(Theorem ef{thm:positive}). And also the effective bound of deg(B) for Property Np is obtained(Theorem ef{thm:1}, ef{thm:2}, ef{thm:3} and ef{thm:4}). For the converse, we get some partial answer(Corollary ef{cor:negative}). Secondly, by using these results we prove some Mukai-type statements. In particular, Mukai's conjecture is true for X when rank(mathcalE)geqg and mu−(mathcalE) is an integer(Corollary ef{cor:Mukai}). Finally for all n, we construct an n-dimensional ruled variety X and an ample line bundle AinPicX which shows that the condition of Mukai's conjecture is optimal for every pgeq0.

The author considers the property \(N_p\) of Green-Lazarsfeld for ruled variety \(X = \text{Proj}_C(E)\) over a curve \(C\) of genus \(g\). Let \(H = {\mathcal O}(1)\) be the tautological line bundle on \(X\). The authors shows: assume that \((\mathbb P^n, {\mathcal O}(a))\) satisfies the property \(N_p\) for some \(p \geq 0\); then there is an integer \(s = s(a, p)\) such that \(aH + \pi^*B\) satisfies the property \(N_p\) if \(\deg(B) \geq s\), where \(\pi : X \rightarrow C\) is the projection. A partial converse to the result above is also obtained by the author. The author also improves \textit{D. C. Butler's} result on minimal slope of vector bundles [J. Differ. Geom. 39, 1--34 (1994; Zbl 0808.14024)] for ruled surfaces; see the paper for the details.
