An important construction in associative theory is Johnson's algebra of quotients. The authors develop an analogue of that construction for Jordan algebras over an arbitrary commutative ring of scalars. Since Johnson's algebras of quotients are defined for denominators which are essential one-sided ideals, the natural choice for the Jordan version is taking essential inner ideals are denominators. Moreover, the associative construction requires that the algebra be nonsingular, and therefore a Jordan analogue of non-singularity is also needed. Although there exists a notion of non-singularity for Jordan algebras, this is not enough strong to yield (associative) non-singularity in associative envelopes. For this reason, the authors introduce what they call strong non-singularity in Jordan algebras. The main result then asserts that every prime strongly non-singular Jordan algebra has a maximal algebra of quotients, similar to Johnson's algebra of quotients.
