The authors present a method for investigating the cyclicity of an elementary focus or center of a polynomial system of differential equations by means of complexification of the system and application of algorithms of computational algebra, which works in some cases when the ideal is not a radical ideal. Hence, it is presented an approach to treat the case that the Bautin ideal \(\mathcal{B}\) of focus quantities is not a radical ideal (more precisely, when the ideal \(\mathcal{B}_k\) is not radical, where \(\mathcal{B}_k\) is the ideal generated by the shortest initial string of focus quantities that, like the Bautin ideal, determines the center variety). The method is illustrated by means of a family of cubic systems. The key point idea is to work in a monoid ring associated with the system where the ideal \(\mathcal{B}_k\) will be radical.
