The author presents an interesting, very general result characterizing real-algebra isomorphisms between uniform algebras. It reads as follows. Theorem. Let \(A,B\) be uniform algebras, \(A_1\) be a subset of \(A\). Let \(\rho,\tau:A_1\to A\) and \(S,T:A_1\to B\) be mappings. Suppose that \(\rho(A_1), \tau(A_1)\) and \(S(A_1),T(A_1)\) are closed under multiplication and contain \(\exp A\) and \(\exp B\), respectively. Assume that there is a nonzero scalar \(\alpha\) such that \(\| S(f)T(g)-\alpha 1\|_\infty=\| \rho(f)\tau (g)-\alpha 1\|_\infty\) holds for all \(f,g\in A_1\) and that there is an element \(e_1\in A_1\) such that \(\rho(e_1)=1\), \(S(e_1)^{-1}\in S(A_1)\) and \(S(e_1)\in T(A_1)\). Then there exists a real-algebra isomorphism \(\widetilde S:A\to B\) such that \(\widetilde S(\rho(f))=S(e_1)^{-1}S(f)\) for every \(f\in A_1\). This theorem significantly generalizes former results obtained by the groups Hatori-Miura-Takagi, Luttman-Lambert, Miura-Honma-Shindo, Shindo, and Hatori-Miura-Shindo-Takagi. Some direct applications of the main theorem are also presented as examples.
