The boundary value problem on the whole real line \[ ( a( x(t) ) x'(t) )' = f(t,x(t),x'(t)) \quad \text{a.e.}\;t \in {\mathbb R}, \] \[ x(-\infty) = \nu^-, \quad x(\infty) = \nu^+ \] is considered, where \(\nu^-<\nu^+\), \(a\) is a continuous positive function and \(f\) is a Carathéodory function. Existence and nonexistence results of solutions are established. As a consequence, in the particular case, a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of solutions is presented.
