The authors study skew product equations describing the symmetry of a system as considered in [\textit{D. Chan}, J. Differ. Equations 226, No.~1, 118--134 (2006; Zbl 1120.34028)]. Here, the symmetry group is a compact Lie group \(G\). The main objective of this paper is a geometric definition of resonance in Hopf bifurcation from relative equilibria. The Hopf bifurcation defines a certain element \(\sigma_0\in G\) which is related to the spatiotemporal generator of the involved relative periodic solution. The authors define the Hopf bifurcation to be resonant if \(\sigma_0\) is a singular element of the underlying Lie group \(G\). Further the equivalence with corresponding definitions in [\textit{B. Fiedler} and \textit{D. Turaev}, Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 145, No.~2, 129--159 (1998; Zbl 0957.37026)], and [\textit{C. Wulff}, Doc. Math. J. DMV 5, 227--274 (2000; Zbl 0951.35013)], has been proved. Finally, the authors extend \textit{D. Chan}'s approach [see J. Differ. Equations 226, No.~1, 118--134 (2006; Zbl 1120.34028)], to study Hopf bifurcation from relative equilibria with trivial isotropy subgroup in systems with compact symmetry.
