The authors construct a five-parameter family of gauge-nonequivalent SU(2) instantons on a noncommutative 4-sphere \(S^4_{\theta}\) and of topological charge equal to 1. They first review the gauge theories (connections) on finite projective modules over algebras with a differential calculus, then deal with toric noncommutative manifolds, isospectral deformations of classical spherical geometries which can be endowed with the structure of Riemannian spin manifold, and were studied by \textit{A. Connes} and the first author [Commun. Math. Phys. 221, 141--159 (2001; Zbl 0997.81045)]. The authors continue the analysis of the SU(2) noncommutative principal fibration \(S^7_{\theta\prime}\to S^4_{\theta}\) over \(S^4_{\theta}\) in their paper [Commun. Math. Phys. 260, 203--225 (2005; Zbl 1093.58004)] and introduce a Yang-Mills action functional to the gauge theories from which field equations (equations for critical points) by the Hodge \(*\theta\) operator as well as a topological action whose absolute value gives a lower bound for the Yang-Mills action. In the main part of the paper (Sect. 5) the authors construct explicitly a set of SU(2) instantons on \(S^4_{\theta}\) which are solutions of self-duality equations and realize absolute minima of the Yang-Mills functional. The authors show the basic instanton is invariant under twisted orthogonal transformations in the Hopf algebra \(U_{\theta}(so(5))\) and then perturb it by the action of conformal operators in \(U_{\theta}(\text{so}(5,1))\setminus U_{\theta}(\text{so}(5))\) producing a five-parameter family of new, not gauge equivalent instantons. A completeness argument is obtained by using noncommutative index theory to compute the dimension of the tangent space of the moduli space of instantons of \(S^4_{\theta}\) which is shown to be just five. The last part (Sect. 6) sketches a general scheme for gauge theories on four dimensional toric noncommutative manifolds.
