In this paper, the authors study Riemann surfaces with an anti-holomorphic involution, called Klein surfaces. They study theta characteristics that are invariant with respect to this involution. There is a line bundle on the Jacobian of the Klein surface corresponding to the theta characteristic, and first they compute the Appell-Humbert data of this line bundle and then use that to compute the first Stiefel-Whitney class in terms of the quadratic form that the theta characteristic induces on the cohomology with coefficients in \(\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}\). They then proceed to show that it only depends on the fixed curves of the involution, and to give a topological formula for the values on each of those curves.
