A new compactification of the moduli of vector bundles on a smooth complex projective polarized surface is announced. This compactification is obtained when families of vector bundles on a surface \(S\) are completed by vector bundles of certain class on so-called ``trees of surfaces''. A tree of surfaces is constructed inductively by blowups of \(S\) at a point and attaching \(\mathbb{CP}^2\)'s along exceptional lines of the blowups. The compactification suggested by the authors is an algebraic analogue of Feehan-Taubes-Uhlenbeck compactification of moduli of ASD-connections on vector bundles, by means of the Kobayashi-Hitchin correspondence. This correspondence identifies ASD Yang-Mills connections with slope-stable vector bundles with 1st Chern class \(c_1=0\). The construction presented in the paper is developed for any 1st Chern class \(c_1\). From the abstract: ``The new moduli spaces are algebraic spaces arising as quotients by group actions according to a result of \textit{J. Kollár} [Ann. Math. (2) 145, No. 1, 33--79 (1997; Zbl 0881.14017)]. As an example, the compactification of the space of stable rank 2 vector bundles with Chern classes \(c_1=0,\) \(c_2=2\) on the projective plane is studied in more detail. Proofs are only indicated and will appear in separate papers.''
