    The complex Monge-Ampère equation on a compact Kähler manifold \((X,\omega )\) \[ (\omega +dd^c u)^n = f\omega ^n \] is studied when \(f\in L^1 (X)\) blows up along a divisor. The existence of a solution in the ``finite energy class'' follows from [\textit{V. Guedj} and \textit{A. Zeriahi}, J. Funct. Anal. 250, No. 2, 442--482 (2007; Zbl 1143.32022)] and the uniqueness, up to a constant, from [\textit{S. Dinew}, J. Funct. Anal. 256, No. 7, 2113--2122 (2009; Zbl 1171.32024)]. Here the authors assume that \(f=\exp (\phi -\psi ),\) where \(\phi , \psi\) are \(\omega\)-plurisubharmonic, and \(\psi\) is locally bounded in \(X\setminus D\), \(D\) a divisor. If such \(f\) is positive and smooth in \(X\setminus D\), then the solution is shown to be smooth on that set. Furthermore, some explicit lower bounds for \(u\) (which is unbounded in general) are obtained if \[ f\leq \frac{\mathrm{const.}}{\prod _{j=1}^N |s_j|^2 (-\log |s_j |)^{1+a} }, \] where \(D=\sum D_j\) is a divisor with normal crossings and \(D_j = \{ s_j =0 \} \). The regularity statement is then extended to the equation \[ (\theta +dd^c u)^n = f\omega ^n \] with \(\theta\) a smooth, big and semipositive \((1,1)\)-form on \(X\). Then the smoothness of the solution is obtained on \(X\setminus (D\cup E)\), where \(E\) is an effective simple normal crossing divisor such that \(\{ \theta \} - c_1 (E)\) is Kähler.
